Verbatim has a long history of producing reliable movie files and important data storage . While a 16GB flash drive is a desirable option for portable media users, it is not an unreliable product. When using this product or any media for the first time, I always reformat the drive to a known state. In my case, the media had to be tested on both a Mac laptop and an iPad Pro (running iPadOS). During the initial formatting, Disk Utility on Mac sometimes struggled to format flash drives properly. While two drives appeared to format smoothly, Disk Utility reported multiple formatting errors for the other three despite trying different formatting options. The media was finally formatted with no errors. It was clear that this USB 2.0 design would interfere with quickly transferring large files from a Mac to them. Use these disks for file storage as long as this limitation is acceptable. But given the aforementioned unreliability, you should use backups on multiple drives for security reasons. Movie files are a problem for most slow media. However, the Mac laptop was able to play standard definition .mp4 and .mov files directly from discs without noticeable stuttering. Also tested a 4K video file and passed too. Finally, I tested the transfer speeds by connecting this drive to an iPad via a USB-C to USB adapter and found that this USB 2.0 drive is definitely not suitable for playback. Video files on iPad. When using iPadOS to locate and launch an .mp4 video stored on the hard drive, the launch was delayed, the video was shaky for a few seconds, and finally stopped with just the filename on the screen. These results should be alarming. Users that USB 2.0 transfer rate is not acceptable for playing videos (.mov, .mp4) from flash drive on iPad Pro. If you plan to do this, be sure to choose a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or later flash drive that has a high data transfer rate. Based on my limited testing, even a USB 3.0 drive doesn't have a transfer speed fast enough to work reliably with an iPad Pro. Therefore, a Verbatim 2.0 flash drive has the potential to solve common storage problems (e.g. clean data transfer) but should not be used to store critical data. Data transfer is slow and drive formatting can be unreliable, suggesting that these drives should be used with caution, if not at all. While normal data files can be opened directly from the drive with a Mac laptop, movie files cannot be played directly with an iPad Pro via the USB-C port with an adapter.
