I bought this tester because I needed the most sensitive natural gas leak testing detector I could find. I emailed the manufacturer with the sensitivity specs and the next day someone emailed me the documentation. It detects approximately 17 volatile chemicals - hydrocarbons, alcohols, chlorine-based chemicals - below 50 ppm. The sensitivity of these detectors depends on the type of probe at the end of the probe. This instrument is several times more sensitive to methane than the TIF 8900 I also own, but the TIF detects a wider range of substances. I used TIF to find a few tiny gas leaks in my basement gas line. Gas-Mate confirmed the same leaks and did not find any leaks that were not found by TIF. I've already broken the on/off/sensitivity wheel on TIF by simply turning the wheel down with my thumb. The Gas-Mate features an on/off push button and a delicate finger slider so it seems less prone to accidental breakage. Both devices have thin plastic cases, so be careful not to bump or crush them. Both units have a knurled metal rod, but the Gas-Mate has a smaller sensor on the end that fits into tighter spaces.
