I have a large coat for my Rat Terrier (I've had him for a year) and have decided on a medium sized new rescued Dachshund mixed breed puppy, 7 month. I use a fleece underneath these coats for extra warmth here in Alaska on windy cold days and it still allows them to get out and play. My rat is used to wearing warm clothes because she is 2 years old and my new rescue pup acted like he couldn't move in his coat. After teaching him to wear a coat, he had no problem and went around in a sweater and coat. The coat alone without a base layer is also very good against rain and wind here at AK, but the layer effect is our winter routine. I love these coats but gave four stars because my dogs pee on the fur a lot although there is a decent curl thing that helps a lot, my puppies are male and don't always lift their legs resulting in smelly coats. I wash and dry them constantly and they hold up great. The hole in the collar is useless because it is in the wrong position for a good leash, the leash goes up the neck and not at the base of the neck where the hole is. My dogs also wear the Doggy Buff and I'm glad the collar on these coats doesn't add too much bulk. Warm and not bulky (which is important to me as I hike and backpack a lot)
