We bought 2 of these to place under and around the tray. We noticed a terrible smell and couldn't understand why the box suddenly started to smell so bad. It turned out that our cat peed on the carpet. I think she thought the texture was similar to her filler (which it is, plus add stuck filler that can't be fully extracted, you have 1 giant tray). The carpet was not visibly damp or felt damp. So when I tried to clean it by removing dirt, I unknowingly collected a pile of urine that wrecked my new vacuum cleaner. When I picked up the rug, it was completely soaked in urine, which then seeped onto the floor. We need to replace the flooring AND the sub-floor. We threw away the carpets as it was impossible to clean them. We went back to no mats and the cat went back to just pee in her box.
