I couldn't find any side tables small enough for what I needed but not in an ugly or boring colour/material. I wanted something more than a "phone stand" (think what your grandma used to sit on in the living room with her phone) but smaller than a standard coffee table. It was perfect! I liked the first set so much that we bought another set when I realized we could use two more to have a table at each end of the sofa and loveseat. Yes, they're plastic and the wood is chipboard, and no, I wouldn't put anything heavier than a couple of cats on them, except for liquor, snack bowls, remotes, phones, magazines, whatever else you put on them. they will lean on/in a tidy side table! If Martha Stewart doesn't come, I don't expect guests to criticize the materials, but rather to be shocked at how beautiful they see it. In my opinion the price and amazing quality can't be beat.
