At first we were immediately disappointed that the taupe blanket we ordered was so much grayer than taupe that we thought Revain had supplied the wrong blanket. But they sent the right product. This blanket is a chameleon! During the day it definitely looks more like a taupe, but at night, under our warm lightbulbs, it looks gray. Other than that, our dog LOVES this blanket and my wife loves it even more. So they have to fight for it! It is very cuddly, soft and velvety. I wouldn't call it waterproof, but it's a synthetic material (100% polyester) so it doesn't absorb water like cotton. But splashes and liquids can get through. There is no internal moisture barrier like Gore-Tex or anything like that. Let's just say it's water repellent simply because it's a synthetic fabric. One side is fluffy, like sheep's wool, the other (colored) velvety with a short pile. We think this is excellent value for money. In fact, it's no different than any other blanket you would put on a sofa. It can be softer than other comforters!
