My cats outsmarted him after about a month.

What can I say, my cats REALLY love me. They URGENTLY beg to be in my room at night, but I really need sleep! So I close my door and nothing in the WORLD can stop her from scratching the carpet in front of my door. I've tried putting all sorts of objects in front of the door for years (even weird things like slices of lemon) but they always just scratched the object. But that . Initially, this product was a real find. it worked really well and I only heard him call out twice and that was enough to scare her away completely - not even a protesting meow. I put a rug under the door so that half of it sticks out into the hallway where the cats are. But after about a month at least one of my cats started scratching the edges of the carpet without ever going into shock. He would end up pushing the rug completely away from the door and just go into town and pluck the rug as usual. So, just like *every* item I put near my door, the cat just scratched around *that* item. Here's the problem: There are wires that run parallel to each other along the mat for about 1 inch, and something has to touch at least two of the wires at once for the shock to be delivered. In other words, I can put my fingers on a wire and never get electrocuted. Same goes for a cat - I've watched my cats walk on this mat without being shocked because either they don't step on any wires or when they do it's just one wire at a time (because their paws are so small). Cat has found that the edges of the mat don't butt, so he can slide the mat all the way out from under the door (it's only a few times for him to learn out of desperation), but that hasn't stopped him from doing the whole thing YET poking around in the carpet at night. All in all, this rug is better than nothing. It reduces the number of scratches on the door, but definitely doesn't get rid of them. So if you have very smart/persistent cats, be aware that this may not be a guaranteed cat-to-door solution. All animals are different and I suspect most animals will avoid this mat even if electrocuted at least once, but not my particular cat.
