Stinky stinky stinky

This thing stinks. It literally stunk in the whole kitchen. Is there a washing process you need to go through that I've overlooked? In addition, the bristles do not withstand high friction, they immediately bend and lose their shape when pressure is applied. I wanted to love it but oh my god. that smell. I'm giving it two stars because it's a great size and looks great, but it can't be used.

CARE: To condition bristles, clean with mild soap and warm water; pat with a towel to remove excess moisture and air dry, bristles down to avoid damaging the wooden handle; made in Germany
