I have an original Golden Spike from the 1960's. To be honest the knife wasn't very good. The initial sharpening was a little off and always lost sharpness quickly, making it an absolute monster to sharpen. I thought that was me, so I professionally sharpened it. Still couldn't do better than me. The blade is quite thick so will never cut blocky cheese or any piece of meat well in the field, which is why I always prefer other knives. I decided to get a new copy and compare. Fast forward to this new iteration and there have been some improvements and some serious flaws. There is a wrap on the handle with a clear line down the handle where you can see where the wrap meets. looks cheap However, the blade is very sharp and can shave arm hair instantly. I feel like I can easily sharpen this guy. The bowl is beautiful and the quality is in no way inferior to the original. The new stylus is very hollow and resonates when you click it. Both have a rat tail shaft, but the original is MUCH heavier. Both knives have a sharpening stone, which is cool, but you'll never use it because it's too small and of poor quality (on both knives). All nostalgia is finally lost on the knife from China. Overall this is a disappointing knife trying to invoke nostalgia for bargain priced Chinese steel. That's how much the original Golden Spike cost in the '60s! And since the original was never that great anyway, I now have two knives that I would trade for just about anything else in my collection. If you need something heavy to carry around in your tackle box or in the back of your truck, I think this is the place to go. But even in this price range you can find excellent knives of the best quality, even made in the USA!
