Very easy to assemble. A hammer is included but I didn't need it. I just held them down until I heard them click. Holds together very well. I even moved the cage to add a board underneath and it stayed intact. If you want, you can write a second story. It's easy to have fun with and be creative with. I got this for 2 guinea pigs I rescued. This cage is perfect for her. You have enough space to play. It had enough space to add tunnels and more fun stuff for them. I decide to buy another set to create a second floor so they can spend time away from each other if needed.
