My mother taught me for a long time that the ring around the collar is an inevitable curse whose solution is absolutely mythical. She turned out to be wrong! I've treated extremely fake collar stains of all kinds - gray, yellow, and (er) brown - on cotton, stretch cotton, easy care cotton, and linen shirts and not once has it failed. These were shirts that had been tried multiple times to no avail and I was literally ready to throw them away. Now they are fully restored and have no stains.
