Iffy Design that Allows too Easily the Item to be Rendered Useless

I gave this item two stars because I feel the design is such that one small (albeit, human) error leads to it being completely useless.I bought this jump rope to work out at home when unable to get to the gym. I wanted to try it as soon as it arrived and took it out of the package to investigate and set it up. To adjust the length of the rope you use a small screw and nut system. You loosen the screw to adjust the length and then tighten it causing the base of the screw to press again the rope and hold it in place. The problem with this is that, if the screw becomes loosened at all, the tiny little nut and screw will just fly off the end of the rope the first time you whip it around to jump. This leaves you looking ridiculous as you are left with the disconnected handle in one hand and the end of the rope unattached and laying uselessly on the ground. I was testing it out outside (where many people jump rope) and this is exactly what happened to me after flipping it around exactly two times. The nut and screw flew in a random direction into the grass at mach speed from the end of the whipping rope and so ended quickly my attempt to work out with it. I searched for the lost pieces for a few minutes before realizing it was a completely worthless cause as the pieces would have been moving at a ridiculous speed in just about any direction and landing in grass. The item is now sitting completely useless on a shelf and will remain that way until I purchase a fitting nut and screw which could be hard to find if the seller does offer the part. I gave it two stars since it was in fact human error and the instructions do mention tightening down the screw before using it. But I feel it's a poor design. It would be easy to forget and have the screw loosen over time or while being jostled in a gym back. What happens when you lose it while at the gym? How embarrassing and you may even hit someone with it as it flies off the end.In my situation, I had it tightened down properly but had left the room. My three year old had played with it for a moment which I thought little of. Until I went to use it and found the screw had been loosened. I think putting a small plastic ball or something wide enough at the end that would not allow the screw and nut to slide off would be a easy enough addition to the rope to make it a functional workout tool. But in its current state, I would be nervous to use it again, even if I could replace the missing, essential piece. It seems far to easy for the screw to be loosened or for the user to forget to tighten it before using it. Or even for it to become loosened as someone is using it (Though I never got far enough to test that theory, but from looking at the design, it seems like a reasonable assessment and potential problem.)

Pros
  • Boosts speed
Cons
  • May not be suitable for people with limited mobility
