doesn't work directly, killing my wifi

I bought this item a few years ago and I remember it not working (overheating, mouse lag, etc.). I then decided to try again to see if they improved at all. I plugged it in and had problems right away. The mouse was extremely slow and unusable, barely tracking any movements. The keyboard worked but became slower. The HDMI port for an external monitor worked but went black after a few minutes saying no HDMI connection was found. Also, my Wi-Fi stopped working as soon as I plugged it in. I'm using a MacBook Pro (2017) on Catalina. I don't understand why there are so many high ratings.
