Review on πŸŒ™ Philips Hue Dusk-to-Dawn Outdoor Motion Sensor: Wireless & Easy to Install for Smart Home (Hue Hub Required) by Jodi Tisdale

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Imperfect design. Too sensitive. Limited Application.

I bought 2 of these based on my positive experience with many other Philips Hue products. Because of this, I had high hopes for this outdoor motion sensor that I wanted to integrate into my home automation system. Unfortunately, while the sensor is clearly well built and durable, the internal hardware design appears to be flawed. During the day, even at the lowest sensitivity setting, the sensor is triggered by changes in ambient light, e.g. B. Shadows moving on the ground and cars driving by. well beyond the 40 foot range. For comparison I have a passive IR patio light that uses a built in motion sensor. I put this Hue Outdoor motion sensor next to it with the lowest sensitivity setting. The Hue Outdoor motion sensor is triggered by a hanging potted plant swaying in the wind a few feet away and anyone walking onto the porch. However, the self-contained, motion-activated porch light only triggers when someone approaches the porch. This seems to point to a fundamental flaw in the design of the Hue Outdoor motion sensor, which is that the sensor inside is more like a camera sensor, detecting any movement in bright light. This can be useful for indoor environments, but for outdoor use it generates too many "false positives" motion triggers to be useful. If you only want to use this sensor to turn on the light at night, it's still too sensitive, but it can still be used. If you plan on using it all day for security or other automation purposes, it's useless, so I'll be returning mine.
