If you're recording at home, you need this. I got very frustrated trying to mix 'in the box' (the mixing after it's all recorded on the computer) . If you have a raw room you will try to add VST gates to reduce the noise in the room. You use VST compressors after your signal is recorded. You use a de-esser to weaken your food. It's all a big disappointment because you're swimming against the current and trying to change a bad signal that was recorded with all the built-in bugs. Get to know DBX. I have very little experience with outboards but the reviews are spot on. This channel strip did what years of fiddling with plug-ins couldn't: it gave me a professional-sounding recording. I almost burst into tears. Sounds good and professional. It won't sound like a Neve, but it will give you a nice smooth signal and will drown out the weaknesses in your room. I have to say that the effects controls are very powerful, so don't push them too far to the right. My compressor is at 2 or 1/34. I use the EQ amps judiciously and they deliver nice low-end warmth and light high-end air without being brittle. In fact, I'm re-recording an entire album with it. It is so good.
