Make Sure Fit Is Nug

I've had ups and downs with this product. My 75 pound 12 month old Labrador was spayed 3 days ago. I researched alternatives to the "Cone of Shame" and thought it sounded great. I liked that it was softer than traditional cones but still had plastic windows through which he could see his peripheral vision. I was pleased with the apparent quality when it arrived and it was fairly easy to clip onto the collar and put on. (I will warn dog owners who have really large dogs that the XL size was just right for my 75 pound lab.) The ZenPet PetCone worked fantastic for the first 36 hours, but I woke up the second morning because my dog licked himself. I jumped out of bed and looked into his cage and at first thought he managed to get out of the collar and cone because I could see his whole head (without the cone). What actually happened was that he could fold the cone in half like a turtleneck, except it was folded inwards. I was so sure I would never use this "cone" again that I first gave it a 2 star review while sitting at it until the sun came up. I figured I'd have to buy one of the traditional Elizabethan plastic skittles instead. I actually bought one yesterday morning but it's still unused and with the receipt next to it hoping to return it in a few days. The reason I think the cone was able to fold was because it was too loose. The ZenCone has three Velcro straps and you can put on one, two or three of them depending on your dog's neck size. I only put on two straps the first time, but after The Incident I put on all three. I was still able to slip two fingers between his neck and the collar/cone, which is more comfortable than if I would normally just hold his collar. However, he still feels comfortable and cannot fold the cone. It's a bit flexible and the top hangs over his head, but since it fits his body better I prefer it over the hard plastic types. I highly recommend that ZenPet add some hard plastic props. around the collar to prevent creasing. The collar is still just as comfortable for the dog, but is less likely to roll up like a turtleneck when a determined dog is trying to get somewhere it shouldn't. And it would prevent the top from falling on the dog's forehead.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
