These can be modified a bit as you can choose the buckle along with the belt. The size is the most customizable part and will give you an idea of where to cut for different sizes. I usually wear a size 36-38 and found not cutting it helped me, but I guess it depends on how much extra strap you want. I don't think I have much surplus. The ratchet makes tightening in small increments very easy. Removing the strap is also very quick as all you have to do is pull on the buckle to pull it out. One of the buckles came loose when I didn't tighten it, maybe I didn't press the clip hard enough. I haven't had any other issues with the belt and it works perfectly every day I wear it.
