Review on ViewSonic VA951S Enhanced Viewing Monitor: Crystal-Clear 19" Display, Eco Mode, 1280X1024P by Michael Nunes

Revainrating 5 out of 5

For Linux users and the command line, the 5:4 aspect ratio is fine

This monitor is niche, but when set up correctly it can be great, offering something others don't, a 5:4 aspect ratio. The monitor has excellent contrast and brightness settings and nobody seems to mention it Six modes are available: StandardGameMovieWebTextAnd mono. The text setting is great for the command line as it mutes standard text with a light gray yellow tint, so bold (pure white) text stands out nicely. Another feature I like is the quick switch mode. from DVI mode to VGA mode. When the DVD player is connected to the VGA socket, a button press is enough to switch the inputs, and as soon as you turn off the DVD player, the DVD player will automatically return to your Linux terminal. A note on DVD players: the monitor accepts 1080p, but not well. You should set your DVD player to 1080i and the screen will be nice. I have one shortcoming: the monitor stand is a piece of garbage. It's Vesta compatible and has everything you need to set it up. I paired mine with a $50 mount! My DVD player is handy and I can also turn it to face my bed to watch movies. For this to work you need a special cable coming from a USB splitter: HDMI to VGA with USB power delivery.

Pros
  • monitors
Cons
  • Bad viewing angles. Poor viewing angles can cause the display to appear distorted or blurry when viewed from the side or at an angle.
