I was looking for something to keep my homemade bread fresh without plastic bags, but also needed a window so I could see what was inside. (Out of sight out of mind). Here's what I found: 1. My lunch box came together easily. All holes matched.2. There are no vents, but the back sits a little loose in the slit, which seems to provide enough ventilation.3. Storing homemade sourdough in a linen bread bag in this bread bin is perfect for keeping it soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and mold free. (Of course, slicing down the middle and keeping the cut surfaces pressed together also helps.) The cut loaf will be fine after three days. I even squeezed the two ends in a bag for 6-7 days but it was still soft inside and there was no mould. But when I left two loaf heel slices in a bag in the box, not pressed together, they became hard after 5 days.4. Storing the appetizer in a box without a linen haversack was fine, but it's better if you also use a linen haversack. Actually, this is the manufacturer's recommendation. After purchase they email suggesting putting the bread in a paper bag or towel in the bread bin, but a canvas bread bag does the same job and is much easier. It's also great for muffins and rolls! If you store them in an airtight container, the muffins in particular can get soggy and slimy on top. I place a paper towel on the top shelf of the bread bin and place cupcakes or muffins on top. I don't use bags and they stay nice and fresh.6. I was concerned if the finish would give off any odor and the bread would taste funny. It's not like this. Maybe there was a little hint on the first day - I have a very sensitive nose, but no one else in the family noticed anything. Even though he was there on the first day, I didn't notice anything afterwards.
