Review on Rustark Grommet Setting Eyelets: A Must-Have for Professional Sewing Projects by Barbara Simmons

Revainrating 2 out of 5

How do people give this 4 or 5 stars?

Let's start with the good, grommets and washers are decent. The metal is thin but quite strong. It lasted a few puffs of 8 oz. Ball head hammer to roll down the barrel and hold the washer firmly over a light nylon strap (my test subject) about 0.08 inch thick. The paint will scratch but that is to be expected as it is in direct contact with the substrate. in good condition, no cracks, the lid has been sealed with tape to avoid accidental opening. The instructions that came with it were enough for me. That gets 4 stars. Well, "not so good". The front of the head has a slightly domed/convex shape making it difficult to get good close contact with striking tools. It's also pretty easy. It took a lot of hits to turn the barrel. An 8 ounce ball head hammer reduced the number of blows required. The Hammer really smelled of kerosene. Not that bad and not scary. Just wipe it with some kind of cleaner. Minus 1 star, total = 3 stars. The hole punch tool was dull out of the box, it needed sharpening before I could punch my test material. The steel is not hardened and does not hold an edge. Minus 1 star, subtotal = 2 stars. The stamp for rolling the barrel over the washer had to be changed in shape. The inside edge that should go into the barrel is too wide. It will flatten the barrel, not roll. I used a combination of a shovel and round diamond burs to reshape it, it worked fine after that. Minus 1 star, total = 1 star. The base also needed reshaping. The groove on the bottom of the post is not concave, causing the lug to take on a square shape. Directly at the bottom of the post is a ledge, followed by a corner to the bottom of a shallow groove and finally another corner. I took a round diamond head of the right size to get rid of the burr and give the groove a concave shape. After that it worked better. I might sand down the groove to make it smoother and possibly reduce the chance of scratching the paint. Minus 1 star, cumulative = 0 stars. Because I'm a generous person, plus 1 star, and today is Wednesday, plus 1 star more. Grand total = 2 stars.

Pros
  • The best
Cons
  • Packaging is ugly

A heavier hmwr is needed!! The light weight one included doesn't work well at all!
