My first digital camera was an Olympus Camedia with a 10x optical zoom. It was a great camera, but it was almost impossible to carry around if I wanted to take pictures. This is simply not a problem with the Canon A1100IS. It fits almost anywhere you can carry your wallet. Plus, the construction is solid enough that I don't think you need to worry about crushing it unless you're sitting directly on it. The ease of use is absolutely satisfactory. Some of the icons on the various buttons take a little getting used to, but that's not a problem. Perhaps the most important thing for people like me with very large hands and fingers is that the camera is still fairly easy to use. The picture quality is more than good. Of course I use image enhancement software because I like to improve color saturation, contrast or whatever, but the images come out fine without any fuss - especially in terms of sharpness and clarity. Overall, if you're looking for an affordable, all-round camera that you can take with you and leave your camera bag, this is a very good choice.
