Very impressive and fun

Okay, I've been living with this for a couple of weeks and I'm really impressed. My background is a former budget audiophile who hasn't managed to build a decent system in six years - and decided to see what ChiFi is about. The last system was a vintage Amber Series 70 amp/Parasound/NAD CD/Magnepan MMG preamp and I compare it to my memory of it. I connected this Fosi AudioTPA3116 based integrated amplifier to Q Audio 3010 and Chromecast Audio speakers. Q Audios are small enough that I can't judge bass availability in the lower region, and ChromeCast Audio means I'm still looking at Spotify compression, but with those limitations, let's start. Very surprised by the power available and the control over the (small) speaker cones. I chose it because this board design seems to have more capacitors than others at Revain, but I'm used to the big banks in Amber and was skeptical of its high current performance. At least with the small speakers I don't have to worry, they sound light and casual in a lower powered environment. Don't feel the amp strain or play along with a variety of music. They say these things are about 90% efficient and it shocks me that this tiny device puts out so much power. Turning on the big speakers at high volume might make you feel different, but for a normal/loud volume level in a 300-square-foot room. some resonance. Sound production and visualization is also good, with musicians easy to find over a fairly wide range - although that range is somewhat flat, without much depth, and the musicians sound a little distant rather than right in your room. A key caveat here is Chromecast Audio's limitations. I believe these areas are particularly affected by streaming via Spotify rather than a direct connection from a disc player or lossless audio stream, and my issues may well be source-related. The sound quality seems dry to me. Not harsh at all, but the vocals and strings in particular lack the warmth I prefer (very dry at first with typical improvement over time). There's a lot of detail here though, and you can even hear some breathing/fingering/thumping. This is a more analytical approach and in fact the amount of information available is extremely impressive for the price. I think it reflects the quality of the preamp and suggests that this thing has a very short signal path. With a very small board, no tone controls, and only one input, it seems to me that there are a lot of "straight wires with gain" although the chip plays with the DSP in ways I don't understand. positives here. It doesn't look like an expensive high-bias AB amp with a 10-pound heatsink. Don't expect it, but this is a much better than expected integrated amplifier, of a quality enough to provide a satisfying critical listening experience and great value for money! It sounds significantly better than the typical mainstream receiver of the 1980s/1990s, and at this price point it's a ridiculous deal. In Dino days you would have paid a lot more money to get that kind of sound quality. An excellent introduction to high-end acoustics.
