I have found that battery operated flashlights can either hit or miss. Some bulbs I bought from Amazon a few years ago worked fine the first year, the second year they started flickering erratically and oddly only 2 of the 4 colors faded (only used indoors). I've been using them outdoors since early December and just got them around 01/18. away. They've done a good job all season. I kept them in place all the time. Each strand needed new batteries every 2 weeks (I used Duracell). The timer worked great too. Hopefully by next Christmas they will work just as well considering they aren't that cheap.
