I didn't know about the pre-filter until recently. It does not clog as the fish "cleans" it. Has greatly improved the circulation of my filter system and main filter as it no longer clogs. To my main filter I gave up the factory filters and added a coarse filter and biostones instead. The flow through the filter is excellent and the natural chemical balance in my tank has greatly improved. And now you don't have to clean or replace expensive filters every few days. The fish are happy!
