I needed a lightweight backpack for a trip to Universal Studios. I wanted one so I could carry my groceries as well as water, snacks and whatnot. I bought this because it was described as lightweight and the body material is water resistant nylon. It worked very well and was almost perfect. It comes in its own pouch which is small. You pull the backpack out of the bag, then the bag flips over and becomes a hanging inner bag at the top of the main compartment. The zipper is both ways so it still works. I liked this feature. It would be the perfect backpack to pack into a large bag for a long trip in case you need another bag. The straps aren't soft, they're just two sides of the material and a webbing strap, but I don't. I don't want soft straps. In the Florida heat, I wanted something that wasn't too uncomfortable, and I wasn't planning on putting too much strain on it anyway. Chest strap is a nice addition. What I didn't notice in any other review is that the buckle for it is neon orange and includes a safety whistle. It's good and all, but I wish it was black or gray to match the rest of the buckles. The material is waterproof but not waterproof. Make sure you know this. The first day we had a torrential downpour and the backpack got very wet when I went to the shelter. I noticed that some of the moisture got inside (it doesn't matter what I had there). On the second day it also started to rain, but overall the backpack didn't get that wet. Part of the surface got wet, but I didn't notice the water seeping in. Dries quickly too. The interior is spacious with multiple pockets. There is a main compartment with a smaller pocket on the bottom to store your tablet and a hanging zippered pocket on top. In addition, there is a small zipped compartment on the outside with a small zipped compartment above it. Then there is a medium sized zip pocket at the bottom. In all pockets, I put an extra pair of shorts (for water rides) in a 2-gallon zippered bag, a small folded towel (for drying), a large USB rechargeable power bank, a few small electronics, a small case with a lid with OTC meds like Tylenol, antacids, Pepto-Bismol chewables, etc. in 1-cup folded ziplock bags, canisters of sunscreen and body spray (hey, the Florida summer heat is no joke, I wanted to be able to optimize during the day), assorted snacks consisting of tuna pouches, Clif bars, mini granola bars, and pouches of sports fruit gummies (proteins, carbs, sugars, and electrolytes coated in it) and two 16-ounce bottles. Water inside and 22 and 16 oz Nalgene bottles outside in water bottle holders. I also had a couple of quart-sized garbage bags/zippers (for wet clothes/garbage storage) and had room to spare. On the second day I used an extra pair of shorts, drank two 16 ounce bottles of water, ate some snacks and the small towel was moved to another compartment giving me a lot more room and a much lighter pack. I made several purchases that day and they all fit in a backpack and were easy to carry. Water bottle holders on the sides fit 16oz and 22oz Nalgene bottles perfectly, like I said I've carried both. So if you have one of these bottles, fear not. The pockets have a very tight elastic at the mouth so you have to push a little first to get them in, but they fit perfectly. I used the compression straps on the sides and threaded them through the cap tether on the bottles for extra security, as I used to have to bend down to toss Nalgene bottles out of backpacks. Now we get to the "almost perfect" part and why I took off a star. A small zipped compartment on the upper back has a fabric flap to protect the zip. This is good except this fabric is very easy to zip up. If you don't use your finger and keep it out of the way, you're guaranteed to get stuck in it. And it's extremely difficult to get out. I got stuck multiple times over the course of two days even after becoming aware of the issue and twice I thought I would break the zipper trying to pull the fabric out but luckily I didn't. had a little more rigidity. I know this isn't a frame backpack, but it would be nice if it were a little stiffer when sitting alone. This is a trifle, however, and I didn't deduct anything for it. Now for durability. I wore the backpack for two days. Aside from rain and sun/heat, durability testing doesn't affect it much, so I can't comment on long-term durability. Is this a backpack for a long hike? Absolutely not. While the material isn't as thin as paper, it doesn't need to be strong, and something sharp, say a stick or branch, will likely poke a hole in it easily. Is it suitable for flying? Yes, as a porter. I would definitely take this on the plane. How is baggage checked in? I'd bet a big "unlikely" on that, especially if the straps are left loose and dangling. Make sure you understand this is not a heavy backpack. It is ideal for everyday use with light to medium loads. or as a sports bag. This is absolutely not a backpack you can stuff 50 pounds of camping gear in and expect it to last camp, let alone the entire trip. The Gonex logo on the back is printed on the fabric and not embroidered as it appears. . I used Badge Magic to apply the InGen patch over the logo which gave me a themed backpack. I bought the black version but it's sold out at the moment and it was blue by default when I wrote the review.
