I had no problem getting them to the right shape and full height after opening. They are compressed and folded. This made it really hard for us when we thought about possibly ordering online (we were on a tight budget and the stores were way overpriced). I read all the reviews of different brands and styles. narrowed my search until I finally sorted out everything else and ordered these. My dogs couldn't be happier with me. i'm a good girl Yes. Beds are higher than what they are used to (which weren't down-filled) but not difficult to climb on, strong enough to support their weight but soft enough to "sag" underneath . *enough. They don't sink too deep, they don't touch the hard floor through the mattress and the beds don't feel like bricks underneath (damn my 1.5 year old grandson loves to sit and lay on them, they are so comfortable ). I swear it's impossible to get a big dog from them now. Sometimes I have to ask him to move around a bit at night as the mattresses *really* can slip a bit on the hardwood floor and block the door they sleep in. He used to get up immediately when asked so I could move the old beds. Not so much anymore. He is too comfortable and too deeply asleep not to be disturbed by my stupid human request. Very nice beds bought by a very nice girl for her very nice boys.
