Review on Gobe Variable ND2 400 24 Layer Filter by Colin Arcos

Perfect for the second time

Wanted to try Gobe Filter for a long time because of the tree planting campaign when I bought it. My first order came in and I was a little disappointed that there were stains between the layers of glass on the surface. I sent it back and got a replacement which was perfect. So maybe it was an accident. All in all, this is a great filter. I lowered the score a bit because although it comes in a nice box and tin, it feels like a general purpose tin and the smaller filter rattles inside. I'll probably buy a wallet with a filter one day, but right now I don't care that it's dangling in a can in my camera bag. The picture quality is fantastic and just what I need. I'm not trying to put it on a really wide angle lens and that has to do with the optics, not the design of the filter. For reference I tried it on a Rokinon 12mm f2.0 on my BMPCC 4K and it can only use about half of the range before it starts vignetting and the X pattern is very noticeable at maximum settings. Otherwise, on other lenses I have, the X is only visible when you go past the maximum. It would be nice to have a hard stop on the ups and downs, but that doesn't bother me. I have purchased a second filter from Gobe and plan to purchase more in due course.
