At first glance the top of the filter will not stay in place, but it is not necessary for the filter to do its job. I have to clean the filter once a week but it can be reused if you take out all the junk. My snapping turtle dangles under the waterfall and loves it. When I move the filter, the suction cups on the back pop out easily and are very difficult to put back in. This filter can be improved in many ways, aesthetically and internally, but deserves 4 stars because the water in the tanks is immaculate. . I would definitely recommend buying a kit that comes with 3 replacement filter cartridges because if you are caring for your turtle you should replace it at least every two months and clean it of dirt once a week (so the cartridges are easy to remove ). .
