I can't fully assemble the shelf as the top was never finished. The slits on the sides don't even match the pins shown and the back row of slits need to be cut. They don't exist at all. A beautiful unit, but someone who created this shelf didn't finish their job. And that at 53.99 after tax, right?! Dad is a carpenter, he says he knows the material used and can finish the shelf for me to use. But for $54, I firmly believe we don't have to do the work ourselves. I'm sure it's some sort of manufacturing defect, but that doesn't change the question.
