My cat wouldn't use a cardboard scratching post even if it was sprinkled with catnip. We tried a freestanding scratching post shaped like a small cone, but it was too light and when it fell over when she tried to use it, she never touched it again. It took her a week or two to get used to it. This. We tricked her into using it "accidentally" by hooking a thread of yarn to it. Now she will use this scratching post alone. Maybe I should have set it a little higher, but I'm glad she's using it at all. It is very strong and the rope is well attached. I like that it can be rotated and looks like it will last a very long time. We attached it to a makeshift litter box so we didn't have to drill holes in the wall of our apartment. My parents bought a larger 1 meter freestanding scratching post for when we visit her, which she likes better because she can jump. on it and climb it completely. That was fun to watch! But this one is nice and compact, doesn't take up any floor space yet is big enough for her to stretch out when using it and we know she'll never fall over it and it looks better in our small apartment.
