It is better to replace the water heater.

Direct replacement for a Honeywell unit that has failed after only 4 years of service. It comes with sufficient instructions. Someone with beginner level DIY skills should be able to do this fairly easily. Just be sure to check carefully for gas leaks.

Worked great for rough plumbing

I only needed a faceplate to get my water heater working. The old one had worn out the spring on the detonator. I was able to undo and remove the old cap and attach the new cap in minutes. Went like clockwork. It was a lot cheaper than replacing the water heater.

Almost Perfect in Water Heater Parts

I installed this yesterday and it works great. That being said, the neck of this particular controller (the part that screws into the tank) is an inch longer than the one it replaced. I didn't notice this because the old block was screwed on. I decided to install anyway. It works great, but that extra inch caused the lid to not fit properly.

Part Number Confusion

The OEM part number and commercial part number are different and Honeywell provides a conversion chart. However, my OEM PN was not listed. I made a wild guess based on; tank manufacturer, gas flow, insulation thickness etc. and luck. The only difference was the color. It also appears to be an intentional complication aimed at putting customers in the hands of franchise installers.

Pros
  • Heavy Duty Finish
Cons
  • Upgradeable

DIY for Water Heater Parts

This control valve from Honeywell failed on my mom's water heater. This item was a direct replacement. I watched a youtube video on the replacement and found the installation very easy. During my research, I found that this item is very problematic in the industry and many people and installers are disappointed. I also found through a web search that this article has been withdrawn. I've tried calling Honeywell and all you get is a very long musical message and I've never had a chance to speak…
