I always buy a battery grip for my SLR cameras and the R is no exception. The price has come down significantly since it was originally around $450, which is crazy, even with a USB-C charger. Anyway, the price is right now and the grip is *a bit* large, but I'm fine with that. Everything is very solid. They have improved the way it attaches to the camera compared to the 6D grip I used, but no longer include (or however offer) an AA battery compartment. Either way, if you're not comfortable without a handle, it's worth it. I would just buy an extra Canon OEM battery as it is not known if the USB-C charger will charge aftermarket batteries. 2 Canon batteries should get you shooting all day, but it's cheaper to have a few extra batteries in your bag just in case.
