If your child is ready to wear gloves but has small hands, it's difficult to find gloves that are small enough. My 3 year old son was frustrated with the bulky gloves and mittens because he couldn't manipulate anything. As received they almost fit in my adult male hand so they were too big. I tried washing a pair hoping they would shrink but they were still too big for his hands. So if you want them to sit as little as possible, put a pot of boiling water on the stove and pour some steam into the water. It only takes about 5 seconds, then fish them out and set them somewhere to drain and cool. They become VERY small. The weave is also tightened so they are warmer for little hands.
