
I have to admit my peppers are a bit rough and the holes for some of the flakes were small. I just pop the pepper into my spice grinder and grind it finer, which is my preference anyway, and it works great. If you have coarser salt or pepper, you'll need to grind them finer. My top slammed right into my canning ring. I do a lot of canning and rings from different brands may vary slightly. So if you can't snap your cap onto the ring, try a different brand of rings (I understand that if you can't, it might not be worth the hassle). I really like it but I use glasses for everything.
