This actually seems to create particles you thought you couldn't get. I use it in the pond, cut it out with household scissors and wrap it around the pump inlet with elastic string since I don't have a proper filter. It worked so well that I don't need a filter. You can remove it by hitting it with a hose, but really only a few times. After that, I found I just couldn't clean it no matter what, so I threw that piece away and cut off another one. Worst of all I don't remember which side goes down, I wish there was some imprint or color or something to remind me so I don't have to go back and check every time.
