Once you've tried any of these things, it's hard to go back into the dark. They really work when you reduce the light level as much as possible and choose a color that creates a warm but not distracting effect. You don't want to affect the color of the image, nor do you want it to reflect a cooler color off your wall. The goal is to be bright enough to outshine the TV and have a reasonably neutral color. If your wall is white, it's easy. If not, choose a color that is the exact opposite (on the color wheel) of your wall color and reduce the brightness to a minimum. Colors that are too bright hinder the achievement of the goal, odd or distracting colors are the same. I deducted a star b/c yellow, the perfect color for our light blue bedroom, it looks more like yellowish green. Luckily, orange is more yellow than orange, so that's good enough.
