This was a Christmas present for my 6 year old son. He went crazy when he got it and everything worked great. First installed on my iPad Retina (3rd gen) and it worked great. We downloaded the premium version which installs 6GB of data locally. After that, a WiFi connection is no longer required. We then installed it on the iPad Air 2. Both installation methods worked perfectly. I was very impressed with the gameplay and how well the portal and wireless controllers worked. You turn on the controller and portal and the app automatically connects them. We've since invested in a second starter pack to add a second co-op controller. The only real downside is that the portal consumes some battery and requires 3 AAA batteries. I've used Ni-Mh Eneloops and they last several hours of portal gameplay. The controllers are much more energy efficient and these batteries are recharged every few days. So far I'm very impressed with the hardware and software and cannot recommend this version of the tablet for the iPad Gen3 or later. It really feels like a console on a portable screen. I like how the gamepad is stored in the portal. We have become a Skylanders family and I am very happy with this purchase. Of course, you end up spending a little more money on more Skylanders characters and traps!
