Better than the Sennhesier MKH 416?!

I had several friends who kept talking about how good this mic is and that I should try it. I checked out some reviews and videos on YouTube and they were all very good at it, but I decided to check it out for myself and see if it really lives up to the hype. The first thing that surprised me was that this microphone has such a good packaging. The mic itself comes in a really nice hard case and also comes with an XLR cable, windscreen and pole mount. I was already impressed - there is no other microphone at this price that actually comes with all the necessary accessories. In fact, this is unheard of at any price - most just come with the mic itself. It sounded too good to be true. So I turned on the mic and recorded some tests on a Sennhesier MKH 416 that I borrowed from a friend last year. I took some recordings with my camera's (Ursa Mini Pro) mics and then did some testing on a boom near my wife and had her read from a book. I downloaded both onto my computer and all I can say is that I didn't expect the results to be what they were. In ALL of my tests, I preferred Sennhesier's Syncomic microphone. I've listened over and over again and Synco has always been the one I preferred. At that point I thought I needed someone to listen and tell me if I was crazy or not. I asked my wife to listen and she too chose Synco. I said okay, I'll send it to someone who knows the sound a little better, so I emailed it to two of my production friends, one of whom is a professional audio engineer. Both said they preferred the audio from a file called "mic_b" as I called the sync. So we all preferred the Synco sound in every test. So why do I prefer it? Synco seems to be much more neutral and I always found MKH 416 to be too bright and hissing. I always have to equalize all my MKH 416 files, cut the treble by about 4-6kHz and boost the bass by about 500 to get it sounding the way I prefer. The D2 is something I love right out of the box, and at a price that almost makes me feel like it's a mistake for such a low price. But I'm not complaining! Conclusion: Yes, this microphone lives up to the hype. It goes against the grain of mics and outprices them by a factor of 4. Honestly, if you're reading this and need a gun mic, jump on it.
