Review on πŸ”Œ Syba SD-CF-IDE-A: IDE to Compact Flash Adapter with UDMA Support for 3.5-Inch IDE Host Interface by Danny Nedumaran

Great adapter with minor complications

I tested this on a 1996 Pentium desktop PC. The adapter recognized the adapter as an IDE drive. There were some difficulties while formatting the CF card. I had to manually configure the hard drive type in the BIOS. Eventually, Windows 95 installed without any problems. However, after the installation completed and the PC restarted, the computer got stuck on "Loading OS". and never got any further. Tests have shown that all necessary files are on the CF card. Recent research has shown me that the problem is most likely caused by the CF card's firmware declaring it as a removable drive rather than a fixed drive, making it unbootable. I was able to find a Transcend CF170 type CF card, which is an industrial type CF card installed as a hard drive. I need to buy this and do more testing to see if I can boot Windows 95 or 98. The adapter itself appears to be working as intended, and with minimal use I've already noticed an improvement in file transfer speeds over a hard drive of the era.
