They replaced a previous competitor's set that had worn out. I was happy with the original set, although I was concerned that plastic parts were starting to go down the drain. This set has a much thinner thread and weave. It's positively a pleasure to use. I haven't used it long enough to appreciate its reliability and how it degrades over time. What I can say is that it doesn't roughen the skin at all and I also recommend it for sensitive areas of the body. My natural sponges are now bathroom decorations as they don't quite match the strength of these woven plastic sponges.
