I've found that on many devices they block key components near the camera. For example, on my 2nd Gen Echo Show, it couldn't be installed without covering one of the 8 microphones. On my Surface Pro it had to cover either the windows authentication infrared camera (left) or the camera status LED (right), I covered the LED. And on my iPhone 7's front camera, it had to be mounted to the left of the camera so it hangs off the edge of the protective film, otherwise it would block the earpiece, ambient light sensor, and/or proximity sensors. However, I found a way to install them on any device with few restrictions and minimal impact on functionality (my Echo Show still hears me with a closed mic). To be honest I think a lot of these devices should have a physical shutter. that's how it's built in.
