I have purchased eight or ten of these coasters to date and although I have occasionally used them as hot coasters at dinner I have bought many. use like wipes. They are large enough for the round center of a standard dinner plate or bowl to protect my bar's granite countertop and my breakfast table's wood top after the dish comes hot from the microwave. They don't need constant smoothing because they slip out of place like my regular napkins because they stick to the surface they're sitting on and when food drips on them and they dry out I just toss them on the top shelf. Dishwasher instead of using a vegetable brush like I do with regular cloths. Blacks are unobtrusive on the bar counter, and colored ones are bright accents on the table. I imagine they'll last almost forever because they're made of silicone, so their usefulness and durability justify the price to me.
