Good first impression, ended up disappointing

First impressions were good but the good looks and solid construction couldn't make up for the disappointing sound quality. If someone bought this to use as is and didn't plan on plugging in headphones or powered external speakers, I'd say the sound quality is okay. I was expecting the built-in speakers to sound average or "good enough" for casual listening, but I wanted to use them with headphones, so I didn't care about the built-in speakers. Unfortunately, it turned out that the EQ settings preset for the built-in speakers were also sent to the line-out and headphone output. While these settings make the most of the built-in speakers, using headphones or external powered speakers results in a muddy sound with boosted bass and no treble at all. On the other hand, the tonearm is of pretty good quality, with a lightweight aluminum tube and an adjustable counterweight (I was able to reduce the downforce to 2.5g), and the built-in Audio Technica cartridge is much easier for vinyl than the ceramic cartridges Commonly used in portable turntables.
