Back to the lab: has the extra cushioning stolen the stability?

The structure and stability of the Asics Gel Kayano has allowed me to continue doing many of the things that have made me who I am. While the lifespan of a shoe was never long enough, I am extremely grateful to Asics for making this living shoe. I'm not sure how many Gel Kayanos I've had over the years, but there are over 20. I've reinvested in this latest version after reading about Asics adding more cushioning. The extra cushioning is fully noticeable. It is very nice. However, after about a week of normal running, they started getting those familiar Kayano pains before the Asics Gel. After 2 weeks, the pain and swelling increased, as is common with structural problems. Thinking back to the additional cushioning change in this version, I wondered if the cushioning, while comfortable, had created a structural issue for me (reducing stability) that this shoe was meant to fix. These shoes are not cheap and after 2 weeks of wearing them I didn't think I could return them. So I slipped some extra arch supports under the insoles to see if that would change the structure of the shoe and solve the reduced stability issue. It helped a lot. Conclusion: This should not happen with a shoe designed for stability. While extra cushioning is good, it must not be achieved at the expense of a shoe's stability. Customers like me rely on this stability. More testing should have been done prior to the release of this version of this essential shoe. Buyers shouldn't foot the bill for not thoroughly testing such a change, and a shoe designed to solve a stability problem shouldn't cause one. I still love you Asix! But you can do better.
