The printer is about 18 months old (warranty expired) and has printed about 500 pages in total. I was just trying to print a color document on plain A4 single-sided paper. The printer died with a dreaded "0x97" error (according to the internet this is said to be a fatal hardware error/component error). I observed the same error with a plain black and white document. Searched for remedies on the internet. Nothing official found from Epson, only 3rd party "answer" sites (unfortunately assume Epson can't really help). Third-party suggestions ranged from throwing them away and replacing (useless) to powering off and removing/reinstalling all ink cartridges (with the printer's knowledge/cooperation as if they were being replaced. Pretty helpful). Did the complete trick: cleared the print queue, disconnected, waited about 5 minutes, reconnected, went through the ink cartridge replacement log, uninstalled/reinstalled all ink cartridges. After all, the same color document that previously failed to print properly. The dreaded "fatal hardware errorβ turned out to be anything but fatal. I'm happy. Although I don't use the printer extensively (volume wise), I do rely on it to print/fax urgent documents and I find this kind of nonsense quite tiresome. Conclusion: This model is flawed. He lost my trust. I'll be watching closely how long this lasts. I will replace it with a Hewlett Packard model if/when it fails. Update: Also just had to run the head cleaning routine over 20 times to fix the black injectors which is ridiculous. I don't know if servicing HP printheads is more or less easy, but for now it's another reason to try HP. Update: Downgrading my rating for this product to 1 star. I keep bumping into 0x97. Errors and cannot always be resolved by turning off/unplugging the power cord and removing/replacing the cartridge. Requires repeated use of this tool. When I get consecutive 0x97 errors, I can only print a few pages at a time before the printer fails again. serious problem. Also, I can work around the seemingly PERMANENT printhead clogging issues (if I can even get the printer to work at all) by choosing the highest print quality settings (seems to minimize/eliminate the smearing and garbled output, at the expense of a significant increase in print print time). THIS WILL BE MY LAST EPSON PRODUCT OF ANY KIND! Owning this printer has become a ridiculous circus.
