Review on Black Phorus PS5 Speaker - Play-Fi Multi-Room Wireless Audio Streaming for Enhanced SEO by Dave Willis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good sound, set up is a big pain, Play-fi is a big pain

This speaker configuration sounds very good. It's a nice little device, the buttons are nice to the touch and feel like they're well made. It'll fill a room or two, but it's mostly mids and highs, and it's a bit weak on the bass, which I think is to be expected from a unit of this size. When I play mp3 and flac through Play-Fi I hear things in the songs that I've never heard before, so I think the decoder is pretty advanced. But the app makes it useless. The initial installation process took HOURS. I had to enable GPS tracking on my phone (why?) to connect it to my Wi-Fi network. I then had to download a huge update and apply this and that, and finally it only works on the named Wi-Fi network you specified, which is nonsense if you have multiple networks connected together. (I have my ISP's network and a second router with 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and it only works on 2.4GHz because I set it up. Everything else on my network runs on the IP address, and it doesn't matter what network Name is.) Using Wi-Fi/Play-Fi sounds a lot better, but the app situation is *awful*. You can only use the Play-Fi app to use Wi-Fi, and that's a disaster. I copied my music collection to my phone and it's very difficult to play it from the phone because the app makes it cumbersome. It creates playlists, but if you've organized things by albums, it just shows you all the folders in alphabetical order with no sorting option. And between each song there is a pause of a few seconds, which is very annoying. It's more intended for streaming music services, but then why use such an advanced decoder with radio quality streams? The Play-Fi app for Windows is better so you can use your favorite music player, but generally there is about a 5 second delay, not between each song. However, if you only want to limit the output to the music player or play on groups of speakers, you'll have to buy the full app for $15. And the loss of Wi-Fi signal will not recover correctly. If he loses signal for more than a few seconds, he'll give up and you'll have to tell him which speaker you want to play on. I've had to restart the speaker many times after using the microwave because after a minute it just wasn't interested in going back to the one Wi-Fi network it knew. I thought Bluetooth would be better than average with APT, but as far as I can tell it's the same as any other. So two strong pluses and a couple of strong minuses.

Pros
  • Super easy set up! Plug in your speaker, download the Forus app and let the system do the rest. You'll be rocking the house in no time!
Cons
  • Exchange Availability
