Some oddities and annoyances but pretty good for the money

I bought this radio for my 2001 Dodge RAM Diesel truck. My main goal was to add Bluetooth capabilities so I can listen to podcasts and make/receive calls. I also considered using a few possible Apple CarPlay-enabled devices, but refrained from doing so because all worthy devices were relatively expensive and double DIN, which would have required trimming of the bottom bezel and bezel. I then saw this on a $40 sale on Black Friday and ordered it as it seemed like I couldn't go wrong with that amount. In summary I got about half of what I wanted, I can listen to podcasts and internet radio but can't make phone calls because it has a built in microphone and my truck is very loud (see below). I like the rear camera more than I thought. All in all, I think I got my $40, but will probably replace it with an external mic model at some point. I installed it myself. During the installation I encountered several problems. 1) The instructions said I had to connect the emergency input to the radio harness orange wire, but there was no orange wire. I looked through the Revain questions and found a couple of answers from the manufacturer that said if the orange wire was missing then the pink wire should be used instead and there was one. It worked.2. The wire gauge on the radio harness is quite small, so I had trouble trying to connect the wires with 14-18 gauge T-connectors. I ended up stripping some of the truck's wire, wrapping the radio wire around it to make the connection, and then using tape to try and seal it. So far I haven't had any problems with these connections.3. I also had to use the antenna control output to turn my crossover amp on and off. It worked. Good: - I like the reversing camera. It's clear and bright. I didn't care at first, now that I have it I use it. The bluetooth connection seems pretty good, my phone seems to reconnect quickly every time the radio is turned on. What is common, see irritations. The radio, unlike many other radios, does not display any information about what is playing on the phone. It only displays the phone's name. The skip controls seem to work well, as do the answer and hang up controls. Problem: - The USB port does not work. I've tried different cables and phones but never got a signal that the phone is charging, nor a message from the radio that he saw the phone. The touch screen does not work. There are multiple touch controls on the screen, but when I try to press them, nothing happens. I went back and made sure the product description said it was a TFT screen. I suspect some sort of internal wiring harness going to the front of the radio is disconnected or shorted causing problems with the TFT and USB. As far as I can tell, this device doesn't support an external microphone. There is a microphone built into the front of the unit, but it doesn't work well in my noisy diesel truck. This is very unfortunate because one of the things I wanted was the ability to make calls but couldn't while the engine was running. This single issue will likely force me to replace the device in the near future. Whenever I put reverse gear the radio or bluetooth stops playing. It displays the rear camera, but whatever radio function is currently running, it stops. I've never experienced that with any other stereo system. Not only does this happen when I want to back up, but mostly when shifting from parking to traffic as I have to shift into reverse to get there. - The 3-button preset doesn't seem to work reliably. When I press it mostly nothing happens, sometimes it switches to a preset. The rest seems to be working fine. The stereo system turns off when the truck starter is turned on. On most cars, this probably goes unnoticed as you simply get in and immediately turn the key to the 'Start' position. However, with a diesel, I first put the key in the ignition position to fill the cylinders. On a cold morning this can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute, then I reset the key. Considering this and the previously mentioned "plug-in reverse" issue, the radio/bluetooth will typically boot up and stop playing 3 times before I hit the road, which is a bit annoying. I've thought about reducing this with a couple of capacitors, one on the power input and one on the backup power input, but haven't tried it yet. oddities. In 12-hour mode, the clock shows 00:12. 15 minutes past noon it shows 00:15 which I have never seen. - It took me quite a while to figure out how to get into the settings menu. The instruction manual in my box appeared to be for a different model. Either way, if you're in the same boat, you'll need to hold down the volume button to get to the settings menu, where you can set the time, pair with your phone, and so on. If you just press and release the button, you will get the sound of the settings menu. Allows you to adjust the bass set, balance, etc. - I've looked through the menu several times but can't figure out how to unpair the phone. I guess it doesn't matter, but it looks like someone wants to do it.
