Smells a little, maybe mold, cigarette smoke, some kind of chemical or maybe just a bunch of paper. Who knows. However, I bought the branded style eight scraper for twice the price before it was available and it smelled EXACTLY THE SAME when I got it. I even went back to check the reviews to see what others thought of this scent and oddly enough I didn't find a single mention in the thousands of reviews. So I just left it on and the smell went away after about a week as I expected from this one. an inch and a half wider, he likes it. As soon as I took it out of the box he knew exactly what it was - he jumped up, sharpened his nails and passed out. The smell doesn't seem to bother him at all. I also like that it's flat so it doesn't have big scratches that wear off unevenly. If I cut it in half later so it can get to the inside surface, it will be flat too. The only slight downside is that it's a bit shorter (ie vertically - they're the same length) and not as nicely finished as the brand name. Given that my cat is about to rip him to pieces, it doesn't matter. If the smell bothers you, in my experience they all smell.
