I use them on a tripod or light stand.

I use them on a tripod or lighting stand to hold the Pocket Wizard hot shoe mount in an external flash. You can screw the PW hot shoe mount directly, but when installing/dismounting, it is easier to remove the PW mount, flash and pocket wizard for safe storage instead of unscrewing them. These cold shoe mounts can be left on and are inexpensive compared to replacing a worn PW mount.
