It's not designed to hold pencils upright, it's not suitable for that as it has a lid, but it only works when crayons sideways lie inside on it. There is a space inside which is useless if your crayons are diagonal because it leaves plenty of room and the crayon will slide inside unless you stuff it with foam or something to line it up with the hole. So I put my crayons back in the boxes and put them in and placed any extra crayons upright in the middle of the boxes without the boxes. A handle can be used to facilitate transportation. I prefer vertical crayons as I thought the container was made for that, but since it isn't I don't need a lid.
